Turkish delight as Reds progress

Liverpool secured a safe passage into the group stage of the Europa League after grinding out a 2-1 win over Trabzonspor in Turkey as Roy Hodgson became the first Reds boss since Bill Shankly to win his first four European games in charge of the club. The home side could not have wished for a better start as Teofilo Gutierrez converted inside the opening three minutes to void Ryan Babel’s first-leg Anfield winner of one week ago.

Trabzonspor dominated the opening 45 and should have perhaps furthered their lead through captain Ibrahima Yattara, who was guilty of spurning an inviting headed opportunity. Liverpool were much improved after the break, though David Ngog headed well when he perhaps should have found the back of the net with an unmarked header from inside the six-yard box.

Hodgson’s Trabzonspor verdict

Roy Hodgson admitted he was left thrilled by the character shown by Liverpool in their victory in Trabzonspor – but the boss was quick to play down his achievement of matching a long-standing Bill Shankly milestone. The Reds recovered from an early setback to book a place in the group stage of the Europa League thanks to a 2-1 victory in Turkey and ensure their European adventure for 2010-11 will continue.

In doing so, Hodgson became the first Liverpool manager since Shankly to win his first four European matches in charge – but he was keen to avoid any comparisons with the legendary Scot. “I think it would be remarkably immodest of me to claim any credit for that because I don’t think Bill Shankly played too many matches in the first qualifying rounds against Macedonia teams,” he told a post-match press conference in Trabzon. “I think if I want to be able to boast about the same number of consecutive victories as Shankly I might need to win the next 10.”

Will Roy match Shankly feat?

Roy Hodgson is hoping to become the first Liverpool manager since Bill Shankly in 1964-65 to oversee victories in each of his opening three European games in charge. Here are all the need-to-know stats for tonight’s clash with Trabzonspor.

Liverpool‘s European Record (overall):  Pld 316 Won 180 Drawn 66 Lost 70

Liverpool‘s record in Fairs/UEFA Cup/Europa League: Pld 105 Won 59 Drawn 23 Lost 23

Liverpool are meeting Turkish opposition for the third time in five seasons having faced Galatasaray in 2006-07 and Besiktas in 2007-08.

Before tonight Liverpool had already used 20 different players in Europe in their opening two games. The record for a campaign is the 2001-02 season when 28 players appeared.

When scoring against FK Rabotnicki in the previous round Steven Gerrard became only the sixth Liverpool player in history to score in 12 successive seasons. The previous five were Billy Liddell (who scored in 15), Ronnie Whelan (14) and Jack Cox, Arthur Goddard and Emlyn Hughes who each netted in 12.

Who are Trabzonspor?

Liverpool take on Trabzonspor in the first leg of the Europa League play-off tie at Anfield this evening – but how much do you know about the Turkish side?

Trabzonspor are one of the most successful teams in Turkish football and hold the record for the amount of Super Lig titles won by any club in the country outside Istanbul.

As Liverpool dominated in Europe between the years of 1976 and 1984, tonight’s opponents enjoyed their own spell of domestic rule, clinching the Turkish Super Lig on six occasions, the Turkiye Kupası (Turkish Cup) eight times and the Presidential Cup seven. In all, the Black Sea Storm harvested a total of twenty nine trophies throughout this eight-year period; however, their league success in 1984 was to be their last as the club has since failed to reclaim the title.

Legend’s Trabzon warning

David Fairclough is hoping Liverpool can secure a healthy first-leg advantage in their Europa League play-off tie with Trabzonspor on Thursday and ensure a dampened mood amongst the Turkish fans ahead of next week’s return meeting. The Reds take on Senol Gunes’s side at Anfield tomorrow evening before travelling to the notoriously boisterous Huseyin Avni Aker stadium for the second leg on August 26.

It’s the first time the two sides have met since a European Cup tie in 1976 and though Liverpool progressed on that occasion, the first-leg defeat in Turkey is still fresh in the memory of Fairclough. And the Kop legend is eager for Roy Hodgson’s contingent to quell the expectation levels of the Bordo-Mavililer fans by taking a big step towards the Europa League group stage at Anfield.
